Summer Internship

Writer: stephaniet22stephaniet22

This summer, I had the opportunity to start an internship at the Hospitality House, a cornerstone of assistance for those facing homelessness in Boone, North Carolina. My job mostly involved working in the kitchen and food pantry, where I was exposed to new difficulties, educational opportunities, and meaningful interactions every day that expanded my knowledge of compassion and community service. Working in the food pantry expanded my understanding of food insecurity and what that truly means. I helped the team daily by arranging donations, restocking shelves with essentials, and showing compassion and respect to people and families in need.

Witnessing the appreciation on their faces as we provided them with nourishment and support was incredibly rewarding. It reaffirmed how crucial it is to approach social challenges with empathy and initiative. I helped prepare meals for residents and visitors while being supervised by committed staff, making sure each dish was not only tasty but also nutritious.  From chopping vegetables to brainstorming meals, I learned the importance of teamwork, organization, and attention to dietary needs.

In addition to the practical skills I gained, my work at the Hospitality House gave me invaluable insight into empathy and resilience. Every encounter—whether with a resident having lunch or a client at the food pantry—confirmed the immense impact of little deeds of kindness and sincere human connection. It made me more determined to advocate for social justice and significantly contribute to my community.

Upon reflection of my summer internship, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the chance to work with passionate individuals who demonstrate resilience and compassion. In addition to influencing my career goals, The Hospitality House has broadened my understanding of the value of group efforts in promoting positive change. My time as an intern at the Hospitality House was a transformative experience that will always have a unique place in my heart. I'm motivated to keep speaking up for people in need and to share the lessons I've learned about compassion, community service, and empathy.

In summary, my summer experience at the Hospitality House has been more than just an internship; rather, it has been a journey of self-discovery, compassion, and meaningful

friendships. I'm excited to put what I've learned to use as I pursue my academic and professional goals.
