My internship with Hospitaliy House this summer is something I will remember forever. As the public health intern I was able to experience so many different aspects of working at the shelter, and there were truly never two days that were the same.
From helping order the food and fill the food boxes for the bethel food pantry, to creating a resource binder for all of the Shelter Assocaites to use, to petting the donkeys in Bethel with my fellow intern Riley, every week consisted of something new. One of my favorite projects was leading a bracelet-making event for the residents. I had over twenty residents, and co-workers, show up for my event, and I had so much fun helping everyone create their bracelets and pick their colors. It showed me how something as small as a bracelet can really turn someone's day around!
The most meaningful part of my internship was getting to know so many of the clients and lean their stories, which I will carry with me forever. I was there to sit with them during difficult moments, laugh with them on their good days, help them fill out paperwork and applications, and celebrate with them when they found housing or a job. Knowing that I may have been able to make somene's day even a little easier or brighter is something I will cherish forever.
This internship also helped me realize how much I enjoy working directly with people and supporting my community. I am so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to spend my summer at Hospitality House, and I hope to carry the knowledge, experiences, and memories I gained here with me for many years to come!
