An Impactful Internship and Summer to Remember!

My summer spent interning as the Food and Nutrition Intern at Hospitality House has been one of the rewarding and valuable parts of my time in Boone as an Appalachian State student. There is never a dull moment at Hospitality House and I felt like I was making a difference in the lives of the people that I met every day working in Bread of Life Community Kitchen and the Food Pantry. Whether it was making food boxes for families, helping to cook tasty meals for on-site residents, or even just talking with clients, I found the whole experience to be very rewarding.

My coworkers were awesome and I was able to learn a lot while working under my supervisors Emily and James in the kitchen - everything from what it takes to feed 100+ clients 3 times a day to processing the donated food we got from local grocery stores. I also very much enjoyed feeding the chickens (pictured) with Richard! I was able to talk to some of the clients and hearing their stories was very inspiring and gave me a greater respect for non-profit work while connecting me with other members of the Watauga community.

The experience both deepened my connection to the local community and gave me plenty of professional experience to pull from for future nutrition endeavors. My summer internship was great and I highly recommend working for the Hospitality House!
