My Summer at the Hospitality House

This summer, I was incredibly fortunate to intern at the Hospitality House, a nonprofit homeless shelter committed to serving and uplifting our local community. As a psychology major, I was excited to gain hands-on experience working directly with individuals impacted by homelessness, while also exploring the organizational and business aspects of nonprofit work. This dual role gave me a deeper appreciation for the wide range of support services that go into creating a safe, healing environment. One of the most impactful experiences was learning about and helping administer the NeurOptimal® brain training program, a neurofeedback technology used at the shelter to support mental wellness. I not only learned how to proctor sessions, but also had the opportunity to try the program myself—an experience that helped me better understand its calming and restorative effects for our clients.
Beyond the clinical side, I was actively involved in many behind-the-scenes efforts. I assisted in applying for donations for our upcoming auction, prepared marketing materials, and helped organize events like the annual Turkey Trot. I also took part in facility upkeep, including painting and cleaning ahead of inspection, and helped unload and organize pallets of produce and food donations. Throughout my time at the shelter, I found deep value in the simple moments—serving meals, organizing the attic, sharing stories, and building connections with both clients and staff. The team at Hospitality House welcomed us interns with warmth and guidance, showing me what it truly means to serve with compassion and integrity. This internship has strengthened my desire to pursue a career that blends psychology with community service. I leave with a renewed sense of purpose and deep gratitude for the relationships, lessons, and personal growth I experienced here.
