CONCERNED ABOUT HOUSING? 

The Watauga Housing Council is tasked with developing a Comprehensive Community Action Plan and Report by

  1. using the RBA/Community-Developed Framework as the foundation; 

  2. tracking selected RBA indicators and presenting those indicators regularly at meetings; 

  3. identifying funding opportunities and partners as needed; 

  4. hiring staff or contracting for services as needed;

  5. providing reliable information & media communication; 

  6. facilitating communication among committees;

  7. being responsible to ensure communication/coordination with Community Housing Partners

Housing issues in Watauga County have increased rapidly; they are “wicked problems” that remain tough-to-tackle. 

A diverse group of community members and key agency partners hosted a free, four-session series known as the Watauga Housing Forum and out of that, the Watauga Housing Council was formed.

Hospitality House, a regional nonprofit housing and homeless services agency, works in seven rural North Carolina counties (Watauga, Wilkes, Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Mitchell, Yancey) providing housing, shelter, food access, homeless prevention, street outreach, counseling, medical care, and crisis assistance. Since 1984, the mission of Hospitality House has been to rebuild lives and strengthen community by providing a safe, nurturing, healthy environment in which individuals and families experiencing homelessness and poverty-related crises are equipped to become self-sufficient and productive.
